Influences For Narrative

This is a mood board I made to show the aesthetics of the narrative of our video, we also hope to achieve this super 8 effect on our footage aswell. I have to put pictures of weddings and roads on here as it reflects shots from our new narrative.

New Narrative For Our Video

After getting the feedback from our class members we decided to develop a narrative for our video as it was mainly performance shots and it could be boring for viewers. We took inspiration from the title of our song "I Do" and content of the song which is all about love, so our narrative is going to be wedding themed. A bridal party getting the bride ready for her wedding but the bride doesn't want the extravagance of the wedding and it all builds up till its too much and she runs away to be with her fiancĂ©e and get married away from her controlling family.

We want our narrative to be filmed on a super 8 camera because we like the retro look it gives to film, however we don't own a super 8 camera so we plan to edit the footage in after effects and final cut pro to give it the same effect. As I will be the bride in the narrative aswell as performance the super 8 effect will help the viewer differentiate between the two.
This is a music video for Lana Del Rey's song Ultraviolence, it has the super 8 effect and also features a bride, however she just walks around the garden, probably being filmed by her lover from the way she interacts with the camera and breaks the fourth wall. We will be taking this video as inspiration for our own.

Pitch Feedback

The overall feedback from the pitch was that
we has our audience and genre down really
well but our music video needed developing.
A few people thought we should have a narrative for our video and not just performance, which is criticism we are going to take on board.

Pitch

This is a pitch my group and I presented to our class and teachers. We presented so we could feedback on our ideas and develop them.

Digipak Photos

These are my favourites of my set of photos I took with my group. These are the photos just as they were took, no editing such as cropping has yet been done. As I was the model, my group member Emily took the photos the way I wanted. Im very pleased with the photos, and I believe they fit very well with our tropical house genre.

Production Log

Today my group and I took some preliminary photographs for our digipak's and posters. We took the photos in school to make use of the resources, we used a white screen and a projector. We plugged the projector into a laptop to project images onto myself. We also were going to use a large light, however in the first pictures we found it made the projections less visible. So we just used the natural light and the colours in the projections.

It took a while to get set up as we were un familiar with the projection device, however after that the process went very well as we all have had experience with DSLR cameras. Being the model I was a bit nervous at the beginning, however my group members each had visions for their digipaks so that helped with the posing for the pictures.

For the shoot I fake tanned to get the tan our artist Kyla would have, being from Miami. I wore three different outfits, two white and one black. I wanted to wear white to connote the beach feel of the tropical house genre, for this I also had my hair in beachy waves and wore natural make up

I feel that the pictures were a great success for a first try, however we may need a reshoot to get photo of specific poses or projections.

Digipak Photoshoot

Tomorrow my group and I will be doing a photoshoot for our digipak, I am going to be the model for our artist. We originally wanted to shoot on a beach, however after considering the weather in England, and that no beach in England has the look we want it to.

So we've decided to shoot inside our school instead. This is because we worked out a way to bring the beach to us, using a projector to project images of it. I will be wearing three different costumes, picked out for each of my group members digipak designs. Im going to have natural make up, wavey hair and be tanned to fit our genre of tropical house.

These are some examples of pictures we will be projecting

Poster Plan

This is my poster for the promotion of the digipak design. Its main image will be a mid long shot of Kyla dancing in front of a huge sun over water, this will reflect the genre of house music and the beach/ summer aesthetic.

Digipak Plan

This is my plan for the design of my digipak. It features mid shots of our artist Kyla on what will be the front and back panels. With the backgrounds of these being beach projections. The house style will be a beach. The lyric book a pattern of palm trees. Disc 1 a sun setting over the sea and finally disc 2 will be a skyline from some where in Florida.

Tropical House Album Artwork Analysis

Sunset Soul is an a compilation album by Ministry of Sound. The majority of the songs are remixes to make them the tropical house genre. One of our song choices I Do by Felix Jaehn I first listened to on this album.

Genre Music Video Analysis

In this music video for Cheerleader by OMI the scenery and settings connote the house genre. This is as its set on a beach with summer vibes, with iconography such as palm trees and waves. This remixed version of the song was one of the first to be in mainstream charts all over the world, even going to #1. Theres a lot of dancing and performance in the video which is a convention of house music.

Our Artists Name

Our group member Emily suggested the name 'Kyla' after one of our favourite house music producers Kygo. We wanted a name that was unique and one word so it would be recognisable and become iconic, and we all agreed Kyla fitted this criteria  Like artists Cher and Madonna, who have unusual names.

This is the font we used on our mood board and could possibly be a logo for our artist. We used this font because it features the palm leafs inside which is iconography for our genre.

Our Final Song

For our final song we have chosen Felix Jaehn's "I Do". We chose this song as we all really like the song and its very unknown which means we wont be influenced by a previously existing artist.

Our Song Choices

My group and I had a few other song choices before deciding on I Do by Felix Jaehn. Other options where Come and Get It by Selena Gomez, Here For You by Gorgon City ft. Laura Welsh and Comeback by Ella Eyre.

As a group we really liked Comback and thought it would be fun to make a music for. We liked the upbeat music and the sassiness of the lyrics, which we thought would be fun to perform. However after looking at the video we were struggling to think of different idea. As the song is very narrative of a break up, which is her video is about. Another reason we didn't pick this song is that we prefer house genre music, than pop.

We all liked the song Come and Get It, it had the fast beat of a song we were looking for. It's a song that makes you want to dance however its not a dance genre song, which at this point is what were looking for. When looking at the existing music video the colour scheme wasn't something that inspired us as the colours were very rich and dark. Which does match the song however it doesn't fit my groups ultimate vision of faded colours.

Another song we looked at Here For You by Gorgon City, was the genre and my group and I wanted to do our music video for. It was one of our two final choices because we all previously knew and liked the song, but it wasn't as well known by a lot of other people. Therefore the original video wouldn't be recognisable.

The last song in our options is I Do by Felix Jaehn. The song was to to the rest of the group as I suggested it from a compilation album, this means none of us knew of a music video so we new ideas and could be very imaginative. In fact there isn't a music video at all. It also fitted the exact genre we wanted to do , tropical house, a quite new genre that a lot of people aren't familiar with.

Digipak Analysis Video

I filmed a video of my analysis for Lana Del Rey's Honeymoon deluxe edition and Kings of Leon's Only By The Night promotional poster.

Digipak Posters

These posters by Kings of Leon and Nirvana are examples of the poster I need to create for the promotion of my artists album. I analysed the Kings of Leon poster in a video, I have posted. I found it helpful to analyse the poster as it showed me what features I needed to include in my own. These are things such as - artist name
                              - album name
                              - released singles
                              - release date

Examples Of Tropical House Songs

Tropical House Genre

Tropical House is a sub-genre house and deep house music which first came to light in 2010

"it possesses typical house music characteristics, including synthesiser instrumentation, and a 4/4 kick drum pattern. Tropical house differentiates itself from deep house, which can often have a very dark sound, whereas tropical house can be described as having a more uplifting, and relaxing sound.[8] The tempo of tropical house songs is a little slower than deep house. Tropical house does not use the pumping compression effect of "big room" electro house. It usually includes some tropical instruments such as steel drums or marimba"

2015 thus far has been a very good year for the tropical house genre, there have been songs which which have gone into the main stream charts; and their artists have became more well known. Examples of these are Kygo, Robin Schulz and Felix Jaehn. Schulz has had #1's worldwide with the songs Waves and Prayer in the C. Many Tropical house artists remix other artists songs, such as Felix Jaehn who remixed OMI's Cheerleader to worldwide success as a #1 single in many many countries.

Due to the success of the tropical house songs other mainstream artists have started to be influenced by them, such as Justin Bieber and his song What Do You Mean. This shows that tropical house is a progressing genre.

Mood Board

This is the 3-D palm tree we made for our mood board. We decided to make a palm tree because our artist is from Florida, where they are a common in places like the beach. It also gives a indication of the genre. We attached the pictures to the leaves to give a flowing effect.
